megalomaniacally...
there's this one police song on _synchronicity_ called "walking in your footsteps". at the end of the song, sting gets all beatitude-y and sings "they say the meek shall inherit the earth".
but it doesn't sound like that's what he's saying. what it sounds like, as my brother pointed out way back when he and i were teenagers, is this:
"sting shall inherit the earth"
and that, friends, is what's stuck in my head this morning.

i regard the police, all in all, quite positively and i cherish my boxset of same. i think synchronicity is a wonderful album. i can't stand that song, however. i just can't stand it.
i agree. it's a pretty weak song. don't the lyrics say something about a brontosaurus at one point? now, i love dinosaurs, but dinosaurs alone are not enough to save a crappy song.
i've loved the police for many years. and i'm convinced that stuart copeland is one of the best drummers ever.
lyrically, i think sting sort of out-clevers himself sometimes, and other times he out-cutes himself. the brontosaurus was an occasion of the latter, though he might imagine it's an instance of the former. in light of all the treacle he's produced it's easy to forget how important the police were early on. the same is true of genesis under peter gabriel, and even their first album or two under phil collins, which were so much more ambitious than their later stuff under him that it's hard to believe he wasn't swapped out for some disney-theme-song spouting pod person.
